Mandalas are circles contained within a square and arranged into sections that are all organized around a single, central point.
Part of this activity includes – taking a silent walk outdoors to collect items from nature. We then use the collected items to design mandalas that symbolize individual’s past, present and future. Designing a mandala can aid in promotion of attention restoration. Attention Restoration Theory (ART) (Kaplan, 1989, 1995) suggests that mental fatigue and concentration can be improved by time spent in, or looking at nature. The capacity of the brain to focus on a specific stimulus or task is limited and results in ‘directed attention fatigue’.
